Brief 11: Simon on the Streets

I have decided to choose Simon on the Streets as the charity I will donate the proceedings of the project to, as they are local and very active charity, who are doing very positive things to try and tackle homelessness. Here is some information on them, taken from their website.

A FOCUS ON THOSE WHO DON’T GET A SERVICE FROM OTHER AGENCIES

This is the main reason that our organisation exists. The people who we support are often those who are excluded from, or who refuse the intervention of other services. This group of people are often identified by services as those who will not achieve progress and they are therefore left unsupported.

ENTIRELY OUTREACH BASED SERVICE

Our outreach based working practices break down barriers and negates the need for strict rules and restrictions on service users. This results in a much more user friendly service especially for those who have problems with authority and structure, which are major reasons for individuals being excluded from other agencies.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR ITS OWN SAKE (AND THE KNOCK ON EFFECTS)

Everybody who is (has) rough-sleeping has got to a point where they feel there is no-one (or there is actually no-one) they can turn to. We provide a vital role of being someone (as an organisation not individually) who they can turn to. We are a group of people who will show interest in them in a respectful, tolerant, empathetic manner aimed at empowering them to improve their self image and begin to think about making positive changes in their lives, but we ask for nothing in return.
It is worthy of mention that no other organisation sets out to do this with our client group. For many people this kind of relationship that centres on them, their thoughts and desires, their aspirations, their regrets, is key to the kind of self reflection that is necessary before any kind behaviour change will have any real chance of success!

MOTIVATIONAL WORK AROUND ACCESSING SERVICES

The above points with the correct skills, knowledge and experience put us in the ideal position to re-examine the relationships of service users and services that have not been useful in the past. We can, through a combination of good case work and good partnership work, enable service users to reach a point where they feel able to access the specialist support services they need. We can simultaneously work with agencies and support them in their work with the service user.

FUNDING CHOICES

Our success is reliant on us being able to work at the pace of each individual service user. We are committed to working with people no matter how long it takes for them to make some sustainable, positive changes to their life, and until they have no need for support services. Public funding will not allow us to work in this way because of the time constraints that would be put on us. We have therefore taken on the challenge to fund and complete our vital work to support some of society’s most vulnerable people, without the use of government funds.

INTENSIVE SUPPORT

Our intensive support programme aims to engage with hard to reach individuals and offer the appropriate support so that they can begin to make positive changes in their lives. This generally means motivational work, and support with managing the changes our clients will experience as well as more practical support around the specific issues faced. As we aim to support those who find engaging with services particularly challenging progress can be slow. However, our vision is to remain dedicated to these individuals and keep changing our approach until we find a way of working that supports each individual positively.

STREET OUTREACH WORK

Through the day times and some evenings workers go out onto the streets with the objective of meeting rootless and homeless individuals. There are several purposes to this:
  • Engage with individuals who we do not know
  • Offer a supportive and caring relationship
  • Stay in touch with regular clients
  • Sign-post into mainstream services
  • Assess who needs our intensive support

WEEKLY SOUP-RUN

The Soup-Runs go out on a Tuesday evening in Leeds. The purpose of the Soup-Run is to take out food and drink to those who will be sleeping rough that night. Although these aspects of the work are important the most important part of the project is to have contact with our service users, to show them we are there for them and offer support with making changes in their lives when they are ready to make them. Also by being out in the evening we can offer the practical support of referring people to emergency accommodation when the need arises.
